Kick has no weight? Boost 3 dB at 50 to 60 Hz
Boost the kick about 3 dB at 50 to 60 Hz with a wide bell. That's where the thump you feel lives. If the sample has nothing down there, no boost can create it: pick a kick with more low end or layer a sub kick. Then leave room for the bass, so they don't fight.
How to do it
- Put an EQ on the kick.
- Add a wide bell at 50 to 60 Hz and boost about 3 dB.
- Check it on headphones or good speakers; laptop and phone speakers can't play it.
- If the bass now gets lost, cut the bass a little where the kick peaks, or sidechain it.
- If the boost does nothing, the sample has no low end: swap it or layer a sub kick.
Why it works
Weight is felt more than heard. Most kicks have their fundamental around 50 to 60 Hz, so a small lift there makes the kick hit harder without making it louder in the mids.
