How to make half-time drums (and why they feel heavy)
Half-time keeps the same tempo but plays the snare once per bar, on beat 3, instead of on 2 and 4. The kick gets sparser too. The groove feels half as fast and much heavier, while the hi-hats keep the original speed going. It's a classic way to make a drop or a chorus hit harder.
How to do it
- Start from a normal beat: snare on 2 and 4.
- Delete those snares and put one snare on beat 3.
- Thin out the kick: one on 1, maybe one late in the bar.
- Keep the hi-hats at the original speed, or add rolls, so the energy doesn't drop.
- Switch between normal and half-time between sections for contrast.
Why it works
Your body feels the tempo from the snare. With half as many snares, the groove feels slower and bigger, but because the tempo hasn't changed, the song still moves.
