Questions
What does OTT do?
OTT is multiband upward and downward compression. It splits your sound into lows, mids and highs, squashes the loud parts and lifts the quiet ones in each band. Quiet details come up, loud parts go down, and the sound gets thick and in your face. Our tip explains it with a before and after.
Which free OTT plugin is best?
For the classic sound, Xfer OTT. If you want to see what each band is doing and keep the volume matched, Overdo. For more bands, 8TT. For squash plus distortion, Cramit. They're all free, so try two or three on the same synth and keep the one you like.
Does OTT work in FL Studio, Logic and GarageBand?
Every plugin on this list except Ableton's preset loads in any DAW that takes its formats. Logic and GarageBand need AU (all of them except Dynastia), FL Studio, Cubase, Reaper and Studio One take VST3.
Why does OTT make my sound hissy?
Upward compression lifts everything quiet, including noise and reverb tails. Turn the upward part (UP in Overdo, the upward side of Depth in others) down, or use less overall. On drums, a slower time keeps the punch.
